Julian Pridgen AME Zion Candidate for Bishop 2024

Hello, my name is Julian Pridgen and I'm a candidate for the Office of Bishop in our beloved Zion. I was born and raised in a place called Whiteville, North Carolina, a small southeastern farming community located in the coastal plains of the state. When it comes to church, my family's roots are deeply planted in the St. Mark AME Zion Church, Whiteville, where the Pridgen name is etched in the cornerstone of that structure today.

My love for Christ and the church is longstanding as I've served the church from a little boy as an acolyte, usher, assistant superintendent of the church school, Christian education, pastor, and even more. After graduating high school, I joined the United States Marine Corps, where I remained until my retirement. And while in the Marine Corps, I accepted the call to preach and served Zion churches in the southwestern Delta Episcopal District and eastern North Carolina.

Over the years, I've thoroughly enjoyed serving alongside the people of Zion as we've done the work of the Lord together. And I've been fortunate to serve several progressive and thriving congregations that remain great assets to their communities even today. Together, we paid off debts early, earlier than expected.

We've acquired acres of land to include a whole city block plus. And in each situation, we've engaged in community-related issues that involved matters of injustice and racism. As I've helped struggling people, we helped struggling people get on track and helped others maintain their lives and even grow in their walk with God.

On one occasion, I remember opening the church doors as we connected with the local family court system, the department of social services, the girls and boys club. And in the annex of that church, professionals and concerned community members offered parenting classes to struggling parents who had gotten in trouble with the law. It was a beautiful thing to see the church at the center of community collaborating to meet the community need.

I can say more about my own experiences to include getting a call from the United States White House as they were investigating unscrupulous politicians in the community. And our local AME Zion church was recommended as a trusted helpful source for that investigation. I could say more about my work with Duke Divinity School and my association with thriving in ministry or work sponsored by Duke and the Lilly Foundation.

I could also say more about my beloved ecumenical connections, but I'm here today to say to you that I have a vision for our church as we move into the future. It is my hope that we are continually becoming a spiritually and physically wholesome church, knowing and representing God as the disciples of Jesus Christ. I'm optimistic about the future of our church and believe that we can thrive through effective communication to include small group dialogues at every level of the church, constructive critique for the purposes of sharing and adopting best practices that can help us even more, be even more effective disciples of Jesus Christ and stewards of Zion Methodism.

I'm very interested in seeking ways to provide more nurture to pastors and their families. And I am very aware of the vitality of an outstanding laity and local church as the laity and local church are the lifeblood to the Zion connection. I'm married to the brilliant, beautiful, industrious, and task-oriented Deborah Register Pridgen, and we have two adult children, Julian and Christian, and Christian recently blessed us with Javante, our first grandchild.

Finally, I believe emphatically that it is the word of God that has been and will be the only thing that saves and sustains the church. So pray for the church. Pray for Zion.

Pray for those of us on this journey. My name again, Julian Pridgen, candidate for bishop, as I solicit your confidence and vote. The peace of Christ be with you.
